Custom instructions and memory
Set fixed instructions so that AI remembers your preferences.
After this lesson
You create a short set of fixed instructions that are included in every conversation.
In view · How it connects
Preferences without an instruction mountain
Select a few preferences regarding tone, format and boundaries.
Additionally, provide the concrete question and the relevant source information.
Check that agreements do not conflict and adjust them where necessary.
Part 1 of 3 · Choose fixed agreements
Your preference for less movement is on. Choose each part yourself.
What are custom instructions?
Fixed agreements regarding tone, format or boundaries that you do not have to retype every time.
Keep it short
Too many instructions can contradict each other. Choose the 3–5 most important ones.
Test and adjust
Check whether the instructions have the desired effect and refine them.
New practice example
From explanation to a usable result.
Fixed preferences help with repeated tasks, but current source facts must be provided per assignment.
Fictional practice situationA fictitious student always wants short Flemish answers. The opening hours of their own association change next month, but the effective date is missing.
View a possible solution
This is how it can be done
Save as a preference: answer clearly and briefly in Flemish. Only provide the confirmed opening hours and effective date when the concrete task is given. Check during a new conversation which preferences are actually available.
Why this works
A saved preference is not current administration. The presence and operation of memory varies per application and setting.
Make it slightly more difficult
Create a list with two safe style preferences and two factual details that you re-check with every new assignment.
Extra practice, at your own pace. You do not need to submit anything. This does not count towards an automatic assessment.

What do you want to improve in your next attempt?
On this device only. AI answers remain only in this page memory. This is self-review, not a grade.
Why this approach works
A saved preference is not current administration. The presence and operation of memory varies per application and setting.
A step further
Create a list with two safe style preferences and two factual details that you re-check with every new assignment.
A prompt to get you started
Create a short set of custom instructions (max 5 points) for someone who primarily uses AI for emails and summaries. Focus on tone and boundaries.
Apply it
You want to preserve fixed preferences. A colleague suggests putting passwords in the assistant's memory.
Which approach best fits this situation?
- Store passwords because memory is convenient.
- Store only appropriate preferences and use a suitable secure solution for secrets.
- Assume that stored memory is necessary for every task.
With JavaScript, you can check your approach and receive immediate feedback.
Test your insight
What is the advantage of custom instructions?
- You do not have to retype the same agreements every time.
- AI becomes smarter from it.
- It is mandatory.
Extra practice
Write 3–5 custom instructions that suit your work.
1. Answer briefly and professionally. 2. Do not invent prices or promises. 3. Mark missing information.
