Gemini: understand a file or image
Combine a clear question with a document or image and check the details.
After this lesson
You have Gemini analyse a fictitious file without treating missing data as facts.

Gemini: file next to answer
Use a fictitious file or image with a targeted question.
Ask to name values or components separately.
Check figures and mark unreadable information as unknown.
Part 1 of 3 · File and question
Your preference for less movement is on. Choose each part yourself.
Give your file a concrete instruction
Gemini Apps can use supported files such as documents and images as input. The available possibilities and limits depend on your account and environment. Start with a small fictitious table or image and ask a well-defined question. An upload alone does not yet tell the assistant which result you need.
Separate observation from inference
First ask what is literally in the file and only afterwards what conclusion follows from it. With an image, small letters, unclear details, or crops can be misread. Ask to mark illegible values. Check figures yourself with a spreadsheet or calculator when the outcome is important.
Check access and the original context
Adding a file from your device differs from a connection to, for example, Google Drive. Work and school accounts may be restricted by an administrator. Grant only necessary access and check which source the assistant is actually using. Do not assume that all documents in your account are automatically available or suitable for this task.
New practice example
From explanation to a usable result.
With Gemini, ask a delimited question about a document or image and check the original.
Fictional practice situationFictitious: you upload a photo of a poster. The title is sharp, but the bottom part with the time is blurry.
View a possible solution
This is how it can be done
Request two lists: clearly legible text and uncertain parts. The time belongs to the uncertain parts. Ask for a sharper photo before creating a final invitation.
Why this works
A probable interpretation of blurry text is not yet a reliable transcription. More image input does not automatically solve an unclear question.
Make it slightly more difficult
Compare a crop with the full image. What context is lost and which text actually becomes more legible?
Extra practice, at your own pace. You do not need to submit anything. This does not count towards an automatic assessment.

Place source and concept side by side
Adjust the values in the concept. See what difference you would give back to the writer.
Fictitious table from a file: twelve visitors and three appointments. The price has not been filled in. An empty field does not automatically mean zero.
| Part | Source | Concept | Check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Visitors | 12 | 12 | Same |
| Price | Unknown | 0 | Difference |
| Appointments | 3 | 3 | Same |
Targeted feedback you could provide
- Price: This value is not known in the source. Do not fill in the empty field yourself. Ask to leave this as unknown.
You are only changing three fixed fields of a fictitious concept. This is not a full document analysis or a check of a real upload.
This trial works locally with fictitious data and does not count towards your lesson completion. It starts anew with a new lesson or reload.
A prompt to get you started
Analyse this fictitious table: Monday 4 requests, Tuesday 6, Wednesday unknown. First, provide the literally present values. Only calculate the total of the known values and label it as "known subtotal". Explain why this is not a full weekly total. If I add an image or file, mark illegible data instead of guessing it.
Apply it
Your practice file for Gemini shows: Monday 4 requests, Tuesday 6, Wednesday unknown. Other days were not provided.
Which outcome is supported by the file?
- Known subtotal: 10; the full weekly total cannot be determined.
- Weekly total: 10, because unknown values count as zero.
- Wednesday will also be 6; weekly total 16.

Test your insight
Gemini cannot read a number in your image correctly. What is the correct approach?
- Letting it guess the number to get a complete answer.
- Marking it as illegible and checking the original.
- Treating every missing value as zero.
Extra practice
Create a small text file or an image with the three fictitious rows from the prompt and add this in Gemini if your account supports it. Compare the read values with your original. Note the known subtotal and one limitation of the conclusion.
The known values are Monday 4 and Tuesday 6; Wednesday is missing. The known subtotal is 10. That is not a full weekly total: Wednesday is unknown and the other days were not provided. I check that Gemini does not enter zero for a missing value.
