Summarise and analyse
Extract the core from a document without losing the nuance.
After this lesson
You ask for a traceable summary and keep facts and interpretations separate.
In view · How it connects
From document to core
Use a document that you are allowed to share and keep the original.
Request main points, exceptions and outstanding questions separately.
Check whether the summary preserves the important nuance.
Part 1 of 3 · Full source
Your preference for less movement is on. Choose each part yourself.
Determine what the summary should do
An executive summary, action list, and comparison require a different selection. State which questions need to be answered. Ask to retain limitations, exceptions, and uncertainties instead of only the most striking points.
Ask for traceable sources
Have the summary refer to sections, pages, or quotes that can be found in the original. Check these references yourself. With scans and tables, text recognition may miss information or swap columns.
Use an appropriate calculation tool
A language model can describe a table, but that is no guarantee of correct calculations. Use a spreadsheet, calculator, or verified code for figures. Check filters, period, units, and missing values before drawing conclusions.
New practice example
From explanation to a usable result.
A summary must preserve the core, including exceptions that change the meaning.
Fictional practice situationFictitious source: the library opens on weekdays at 9 o'clock. On Wednesdays, the reading room is closed for maintenance; the lending desk remains open.
View a possible solution
This is how it can be done
The library opens on weekdays at 9 o'clock. On Wednesdays, only the reading room is closed; the lending desk remains available.
Why this works
“The library is closed on Wednesday” is shorter, but changes the source. A good summary preserves the distinction between services.
Make it slightly more difficult
Write a version of a single sentence and then indicate where the exception is still visible.
Extra practice, at your own pace. You do not need to submit anything. This does not count towards an automatic assessment.

Why this approach works
“The library is closed on Wednesday” is shorter, but changes the source. A good summary preserves the distinction between services.
A step further
Write a version of a single sentence and then indicate where the exception is still visible.

Become the source checker yourself
Only mark statements that the source does not support. Then check your selection.
Fictitious source: the workshop is Saturday from 10 to 11 o'clock, online. The price and calendar date are not yet known.
Select which sentences you would correct above. The answer remains hidden until you check your selection.
This trial works locally with fictitious data and does not count towards your lesson completion. It starts anew with a new lesson or reload.
A prompt to get you started
Summarise exclusively the text below in five key points. For each point, mention the relevant section or a short traceable text fragment. Create separate lists for established facts, interpretations, and missing information. Include important exceptions. Text: [public practice text].
Apply it
A fictitious report mentions 12 requests in May and 18 in June. The definition of a request is the same in both months. Nothing is stated in the report about the cause.
Which summary remains faithful to the source?
- June counts 6 more requests than May; the cause does not emerge from this data.
- The new campaign caused the increase.
- June counts 30 requests; that is the total of both months.
With JavaScript, you can check your approach and receive immediate feedback.
Test your insight
Which check helps most with a summary?
- Checking whether the answer sounds friendly.
- Finding every important point in the original document.
- Only counting the number of words.
Extra practice
Take a short public text. Write a summary prompt and note two checks to verify whether important nuances are preserved.
Summarise the text for a colleague preparing a decision. Retain conditions and exceptions. Check 1: I trace every key point back to the source. Check 2: I check whether a reservation such as "only in this situation" has disappeared from the summary.
