ChatGPT / GPT: from question to usable result

Use goal, context, and targeted follow-up questions to improve a result.

After this lesson

You distinguish ChatGPT from a GPT model and work in two targeted rounds towards a verified text.

In view · An improvement loop

ChatGPT: a targeted second round

  1. State goal, fictitious source, target audience and desired format.

  2. Find a concrete point for improvement and check the facts.

  3. Request one adjustment, for example shorter, while retaining the source data.

Remember: A follow-up question works better if you say exactly what needs to improve. Open het volledige schema ↗

The app and the model differ

ChatGPT is the application you work with. GPT refers to a family of language models that can, among other things, be behind AI applications. What you can do also depends on the app, enabled tools, account settings, and your subscription. A model name on itself does not tell you whether an answer has actually consulted internet sources.

Provide context that changes the answer

Describe the desired result, who it is intended for, the format, and the boundaries. Add a fictitious source if the text must depend on it. For recurring work, you can organise related chats and files in a project. Before adding files, check which data you are allowed to share.

Improve with one clear follow-up question

Read the first version and specify exactly what needs to change: shorter, less jargon, one clear next step, or only data from the source. For current facts, ask for web research with verifiable sources when the environment supports this. Open the sources yourself; a smooth text or a reference does not guarantee a correct answer.

New practice example

From explanation to a usable result.

Work in targeted rounds: first a usable basis, then one verifiable improvement.

Fictional practice situation

Fictitious: you use ChatGPT to write an invitation. The source contains the date and location, but the text is too formal for a community activity.

View a possible solution

This is how it can be done

Follow-up task: make only the tone warmer and use a maximum of 80 words. Keep the date and location exactly. Do not add a programme, price, or contact details.

Why this works

You can place the second version alongside the first and the source. A change in tone is not a free pass to invent details.

Make it slightly more difficult

Subsequently, request a version for a poster of 20 words. Check again whether the core facts are preserved.

Extra practice, at your own pace. You do not need to submit anything. This does not count towards an automatic assessment.

Watch and understand · with narration

From vague to useful

With a computer-generated voice, on-screen text and captions in your chosen language. Start and pause whenever you like. Open the video separately.

Read the text version of the video
  1. A vague request: write an email. The goal, reader and facts are missing.
  2. Give context: an invitation to a fictional online workshop, on Saturday from ten to eleven.
  3. Ask for no more than ninety words, plain language and one next step. Leave missing information open.
  4. Check the time, invented claims and the next step. Then ask for one specific improvement.

Why this approach works

You can place the second version alongside the first and the source. A change in tone is not a free pass to invent details.

A step further

Subsequently, request a version for a poster of 20 words. Check again whether the core facts are preserved.

Build a prompt and compare the versions

Switch off context and boundaries. Which instructions disappear from your task?

Choose the building blocks
1 of 4 building blocks. This compares instructions; no AI answer is created.

Vague start

Write a customer email.

Your constructed prompt

Write a friendly customer email about changed opening hours.

Not yet explicitly provided: context and source facts, format and target audience, boundaries and control.

This trial works locally with fictitious data and does not count towards your lesson completion. It starts anew with a new lesson or reload.

A prompt to get you started

Write an invitation for adults attending a AI workshop for the first time. Use only these fictitious facts: Saturday, 10 to 11 o'clock, online, pre-register via the internal calendar. Maximum 90 words, plain language, one clear next step. Do not invent a date, price, or registration link. Place missing information separately under "Still needed".

Apply it

ChatGPT creates an invitation. Your source mentions “saturday, 10 to 11 o'clock, online”, but no date, price, or link. The draft contains a self-invented meeting link.

Which follow-up question helps make the draft usable?

  • Make the link more convincing.
  • Remove the invented link; retain only confirmed facts and put the date and meeting link under “Still needed”.
  • Also add a suitable price.

With JavaScript, you can check your approach and receive immediate feedback.

Test your insight

What determines whether ChatGPT can consult a current website?

  • Only the length of your prompt.
  • The available tools and settings, not just the model name.
  • Every GPT name automatically guarantees web research.
Extra practice

Use the prompt in ChatGPT. In a second message, ask for a version of maximum 60 words, using the same facts. Compare both versions and note which information is still missing and which claims you have verified.

Both versions mention Saturday, 10–11 o'clock and online participation. The second version is shorter and refers to the internal calendar once. A concrete date and meeting link are still missing. I will only add those when I have a real source; I will not let the tool invent a link.
