Understand what AI can do
Recognise where AI helps you and when you must check yourself.
After this lesson
You can choose a suitable AI task and explain why a convincing answer is not yet a reliable answer.

An assistant beside you
Choose a concrete task: for example, writing a fictitious invitation.
The model creates a possible text. A fluent sentence may still contain errors.
Compare names, dates and agreements with your own source before using the text.
Part 1 of 3 · You decide
Your preference for less movement is on. Choose each part yourself.
A language model makes a prediction
A language model generates text by predicting subsequent tokens based on patterns it learned during training and the context you provide. A token can be a word part, a word, or a punctuation mark. The model can process language, code, and connections, but a fluent answer does not prove the content is correct.
Use AI as a first collaborator
Let AI structure a text, suggest alternatives, or explain a difficult concept. Provide clear boundaries. For exact calculations, use a calculator; for current facts, check a suitable source. Even a model with search or calculation tools can make mistakes.
Check what has consequences
AI can present incorrect facts or invented sources: we call this hallucinations. Check names, numbers, and claims against the original source. The greater the consequences of an error, the more thorough your check should be. Leave important decisions to someone with the right expertise.
New practice example
From explanation to a usable result.
AI makes a proposal based on patterns. You determine whether that proposal is correct and usable.
Fictional practice situationA fictional neighbourhood club is organising a clean-up day. It is fixed: Saturday, gathering at the park. The start time has not yet been agreed upon.
View a possible solution
This is how it can be done
On Saturday, we will clean up the park together. The start time will follow as soon as it is confirmed. A version that adds 9 hours itself goes beyond the source.
Why this works
Improving language is allowed; supplementing a missing fact is not. Therefore, split a AI result into verifiable statements.
Make it slightly more difficult
Add a fictional contact person to a draft. Can you point out why that name must first be confirmed?
Extra practice, at your own pace. You do not need to submit anything. This does not count towards an automatic assessment.

A step further
Add a fictional contact person to a draft. Can you point out why that name must first be confirmed?
A prompt to get you started
I am organising a community activity. Come up with five inviting titles and provide one reason per title why it suits local residents. Do not invent facts about the activity. Ask questions if you lack information.
Apply it
You are preparing a neighbourhood party. You need three invitation titles and want to know the exact number of inhabitants of the municipality.
Which approach suits these two tasks?
- Let AI suggest titles; check the number of inhabitants via the official statistical source.
- Accept both answers if the text is convincing.
- Ask AI for the number of inhabitants three times and take the most frequently mentioned number.
With JavaScript, you can check your approach and receive immediate feedback.
Test your insight
AI mentions an exact figure without a source. What do you do?
- Use the figure because the answer sounds convincing.
- Check the figure using a suitable original source.
- Repeat the same question and choose the most common figure.
Extra practice
Choose one task from your daily life for which AI is suitable and one task where you need extra control. For each task, write why, and how you would check the result.
Suitable: three variants for an invitation, because I can judge the tone and clarity myself. Extra control: a summary of a contract. I will compare every important agreement with the original text and have legal questions reviewed by an expert.
